  • Aaron Judge Hits First Home Run Of 2023

Aaron Judge Hits First Home Run Of 2023

There were familiar chants of “M-V-P!” as Aaron Judge strode toward home plate in the first inning on Opening Day, digging his right cleat across the dirt of the batter’s box as he prepared for his first official at-bat since being named the 16th captain in Yankees franchise history.

It took all of two pitches for Judge to pick up where he left off. Having eclipsed Roger Maris’ single-season American League record with 62 home runs last year, Judge belted the Majors’ first of 2023, powering a Logan Webb sinker over the center-field wall at Yankee Stadium as the Yankees cruised to a 5-0 win over the Giants.

“You really don’t hear much when you hit it and you’re running the bases,” Judge said. “But once I hit home and saw my family there, the roar of the crowd, my teammates — that’s when you soak it in a little bit.”

Judge’s drive came off the bat at an exit velocity of 109.3 mph and traveled a Statcast-projected 422 feet. It also came against the Giants, one of the clubs that attempted to sign Judge this past off-season.

  • New York Mets Payroll Could Reach 500 Million Dollars!

New York Mets Payroll Could Reach 500 Million Dollars!

There is clearly no fear from the Mets owner of the “Steve Cohen Tax.”

After reaching a stunning 12-year, $315 million contract agreement with star shortstop Carlos Correa, the Mets are fast approaching an unheard-of total payroll expense of $500 million.

Yes, half a billion dollars — a very doable outlay for a man worth a reported $17 billion.

As things stand, after the Mets finalize salaries for arbitration-eligible players, they are estimated to have a $381.21 million payroll before taxes.

The 2023 Mets are set to be charged $108.789 million in luxury tax, including $79.389 million on the fourth tax level — the “Steve Cohen Tax.”

That takes the Mets to just shy of $490 million in total payroll expense. And, the way things are going, Cohen may not be done trying to improve his 101-win team that was eliminated by the Padres in the wild-card round.

The previous highest payroll ever for luxury-tax purposes was the  2015 Dodgers at $341,486,133; their pre-tax payroll was $297,918,661. It’s possible the 2022 Dodgers or Mets top that as the figures for this year are not done yet.

Aaron Rodgers Wants To Play For The New York Jets!

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers plans to play for the New York Jets in 2023.

“Since Friday, I made it clear that my intention was to play and my intention is to play for the New York Jets,” Rodgers said.

After the 2022 season, Rogers said he’d take time to decide on his NFL future, admitting that retirement was on the table. The 39-year-old  went on a darkness retreat and revealed Wednesday that he was close to calling it a career.

“When I went into the darkness, I was 90% retiring and 10% playing,” he said.

Rodgers said the Packers organization told him it wanted him back for 2023 before he went on the retreat, but the situation was different after he returned.

“When I came out of the darkness, something changed,” Rodgers said.  The facts are, they want to move on, and now, so do I.”

  • Saquon Barkley Gets Giants Franchise Tag

Saquon Barkley Gets Giants Franchise Tag

The New York Giants are placing the non-exclusive franchise tag on star running back Saquon Barkley.

Barkley put together his best season as a pro under first-year head coach Brian Daboll in 2022. He earned his second-career Pro Bowl invite after recording a career-high 1,312 rushing yards as well as 10 touchdowns.

The Penn State product dazzled during his rookie campaign after New York selected him with the second overall pick in 2018. He led the league with 2,028 scrimmage yards and added 15 total touchdowns on his way to being named the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

New York appeared destined to tag QB Daniel Jones due to stalled negotiations, which would’ve let Barkley test free agency. However, the  Giants reached an agreement on a reported four-year, $160-million contract extension with Jones. The club then elected to use the tender on Barkley.

Honda Recalls 500,000 Accords, Odysseys Over Seat Belt Problem

Honda is recalling a half-million vehicles in the US and Canada because the front seat belts may not latch properly.

The recall covers some of the the automaker’s top-selling models including the 2017 through 2020 CR-V, the 2018 and 2019 Accord, the 2018 through 2020 Odyssey and the 2019 Insight. Also included is the Acura RDX from the 2019 and 2020 model years.

Honda says that the surface coating on the channel for the buckle can deteriorate over time. The release button can shrink against the channel at lower temperatures, increasing friction and stopping the buckle from latching.

If the buckle doesn’t latch, a driver or passenger may not be restrained in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

  • Fan Favorites Return For Mets Spring Training

Fan Favorites Return For Mets Spring Training

The Mets’ reconnection to their history under owner Steve Cohen will mean an increased alumni presence in spring training.

David Wright, Edgardo Alfonzo, Darryl Strawberry, Mookie Wilson, Howard Johnson, John Franco and Al Leiter make up the roster of guest instructors the team will bring to camp, according to manager Buck Showalter.

A notable absentee will be Mike Piazza, who is managing Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic.

Franco’s appearance at camp will be his first in several years. Johnson returned to the Mets family last season, following a rift with the previous regime that had kept him separated from the franchise following his firing as the team’s hitting coach after the 2010 season.

Showalter indicated he plans to utilize Wright to work with rookies Brett Baty and Mark Vientos at third base. But Wright has other commitments that will prevent him from staying longer than two days.
