Baseball All-Star Game Includes 26 First Timers

The 96th MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard will take place on July 14 at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park, airing on FOX at 8 p.m. ET.

The Braves, Dodgers and Phillies are each sending five players to the All-Star Game, tied for the most selections of any club. That includes the Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman earning his 10th selection, and top vote-getter Shohei Ohtani getting his sixth. Braves ace Chris Sale will also make his 10th trip to the All-Star Game.

Phillies star Bryce Harper, who was selected to the game by Commissioner Rob Manfred as a “Legend Pick,” is now a nine-time All-Star. And Angels outfielder Mike Trout, who was voted in as a starter for the American League, leads all players with 12 All-Star selections.

There are 26 first-time All-Stars on this year’s squads, including four rookies: the Tigers’ Kevin McGonigle, the Reds’ Sal Stewart, and the Guardians’ Parker Messick and Travis Bazzana.

Blue Jays Topple Mets 9-3

The Mets were blown out in the finale against the Blue Jays, 9-3, at Rogers Centre, to drop the series. The Mets have now lost ten of their last twelve, and are 2-4 in the Andy Green era.

Starter Freddy Peralta was awful again putting the Mets behind early. Of all the Mets’ disappointments this season, the alleged ace’s shortcomings might be the most perplexing. Peralta is in his career prime and physically hasn’t provided any hint of ailment.
Offensively, the Mets didn’t show life until the eighth, when Carson Benge delivered a two-run homer. Francisco Lindor hit a solo homer in the ninth. The Mets finished with five hits. All told it was just another sloppy loss in a season full of them.

Owner Steve Cohen went on a podcast and discussed a variety of topics including the alleged feud between Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor, David Stearns’s job, the firing of Carlos Mendoza, his unhappiness with the season, and the future of the team.

Luke Weaver has been one of the most dominant relievers in all of baseball, but should the Mets trade him at the deadline since he still has another year on his contract?
The Mets’ next stop is Atlanta for four games. The Mets won two of three games against the NL East-leading Braves at Citi Field last month.

Mets Fire Manager Carlos Mendoza After 34-47 Start

The New York Mets have fired manager Carlos Mendoza.
The move comes with the team in the midst of a miserable season in which the Mets sit at 34-47 — one of the worst records in the National League — despite one of the highest payrolls in MLB.
Andy Green will take over as the team’s interim manager, the team announced.

A few hours after the news broke, Mendoza released a statement thanking the Mets’ organization and the team’s fans for the past three seasons.
Mendoza put up a 206-199 record in three years with the team.

Mendoza’s dismissal is the third managerial change this season. The two other teams to make changes — the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies — acted early, with Boston firing Alex Cora and Philadelphia firing Rob Thomson in April.

Phillies Rout the Mets

After splitting the first two games, the Mets failed to win the series-clinching game against the Phillies on Sunday night, losing 6-2 in the final at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

The Mets picked up right where they left off last night in this one, as they spotted the Phils a 5-0 lead in the first two innings. The Phillies scored an unearned run off Mets starter David Peterson as Peterson walked Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber to get in instant trouble.

New York has had a season full of lowlights, but this was one of the worst. Losing series is nothing new for the Mets, but the way the Mets lost this one was truly remarkable, as they were embarrassed last night and became an afterthought after the first three innings of this one.

The Mets record is now 34-43, last in the NL East division by 5.5 games and 6.0 games out of an NL Wild Card spot.
For the Mets, Kodai Senga (9.00 ERA, 1.88 WHIP in 24 innings) is set to make his second start since returning from injury.

We accomplished some amazing things over a long period of time, many of which will be hard to replicate. He worked every day to help us achieve the ultimate goal, in the ultimate team sport.”
“He set the tone for the organization, to never Falter in the face of adversity, and to do what we could do, and what was in our control, which was to go out and DO OUR JOB.”

Hurricanes Defeat Golden Knights to Win the Stanley Cup

The Carolina Hurricanes won the NHL’s Stanley Cup after beating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 on Sunday in Las Vegas.
The Hurricanes wrapped up the best-of-seven series with a game to spare, winning 4-2 to secure their second crown.

Head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who lifted the Stanley Cup as Carolina’s captain in 2006, led the Hurricanes into the play-offs as the top seed in the Eastern Conference and only lost three matches as they saw off the Ottawa Senators, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Montreal Canadiens and the Golden Knights en route to the title.
“I think it was just our time. We weren’t going to be denied,” Brind’Amour said.

Carolina captain Jordan Staal, a two-time Stanley Cup champion after previously winning with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009, became the oldest player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the play-offs. The 37-year-old scored eight goals and registered four assists in the Hurricanes’ championship run.
